Which brings us to the last and final way in which I do not need Ezra Harrison.

PART III

THE TIME EZRA GAVE ME MY WINGS

35

So all the rumors about lesbians moving in on the first date?

…Yeah, that’s pretty much true.

Nell spends the night and then simply…never leaves.

She goes back to her place for periods of time. To pick up clothes or water her plants. But then she comes back to my apartment and to my bed.

It probably doesn’t help that I reward her with wine, or snuggles, or my tongue every time she returns. But I’ve worked so hard to have her here, and now that she’s mine, I don’t want to spend a second away from her.

Luckily, Ezra doesn’t seem to mind the third roommate.

The three of us spend a lot of time hanging out in the living room. Here, I crack into my homework, Nell loses herself in giant psychology textbooks, and Ezra chews his lips as he scrolls through his computer.

Time flies, and before I know it, I’m encroaching on the end of my second term.

Which means I’m deep in study-mode.

Today, Nell is DJing our study session, and she’s introducing the three of us to Medieval folk music (it’s so weird, and I love it).

“I’m ordering food,” Nell pipes up. “Do you want something?”

Ezra sighs despairingly. “I want so much. How long’ve you got?”

Nell cocks her head. “Aw. Still looking for a job?”

“I’ve got no job. No financial cushion. And no girlfriend to shag the anxiety away. But, you know, you two are the epitome of domestic bliss, so fuck me, I guess.”

“You’ll find something,” I say, trying to be encouraging.

“Legal Aid is hiring,” Nell offers.

Ezra grunts. “I said I need money. That’s all pro bono work.”

“Not all of it. Besides, not everything is about making money. You’ve got to feed your heart, too.”

“No, I’ve got to feed my mouth. And my landlord.”

“Mediterranean?” Nell asks. “I’m buying.”

“Fine by me.”

Nell reads off the menu, and then she gasps. “Oh! They have marinated olives! I love olives.”

Ezra and I exchange a look. I can’t help but grin.

Nell catches us. “What? What is it?”

I shake my head. “Nothing, it’s just…an inside joke. It’s dumb.”

“Bring me inside the joke, you tossers.”

Ezra takes off his reading glasses and pinches the arm between his fingers, gesturing with them. “An olive is like…something you never liked as a kid, but then you grow up and you realize they’re amazing. Joan is an olive.”

Nell’s eyebrows scrunch together. “I think I’ve always liked olives.”

“See, Ezra? Some people always like olives. Don’t blame your pickiness on other people.”

There’s a bowl of peanuts on the table. He picks one up and throws it at me in retaliation. I surprise us both by catching it in my mouth. We look at each other, blink, and both pump our fists in the air at the same time.

“Holy shit! You caught something!”

“For the first time in my life!”

“Gooooooal!” Ezra shouts, and we high-five.

Nell groans dramatically. “Gosh, get a room already, won’t you?”

Ezra’s cheeks flare a little.
